Bygone views of Northern England from The Frank Thompson Sketch book c.1890-1910Updates 28/02/10
In January 2010 the Thorpe Thewles History Group was contacted by the maternal great-grandson of a Mr. Frank Thompson regarding an image of the Vane Arms Inn, Thorpe Thewles, that he had come across in his great-grandfathers watercolour sketch book. The image is believed to date from the period c.1890-1910 and is of tremendous local historical interest and is one of a series of unique views of northern England that have never been seen in public previously.
The artist, Frank
Thompson, lived in the City of Durham and exhibited widely between 1890 and
1910. He painted watercolour landscapes in Scotland and the North East of
England, the Fens, Sussex, Wales, Holland and Belgium. The majority of his work
is still owned by his descendents. Frank died in 1926 but during his lifetime
exhibited four times at Royal Academy exhibitions –
1898 Pittenween, Fifeshire;
1899 Richmond, Yorkshire;
1905 The Mill Pond; (location not known);
1910 The Old Bridge, St Ives, (Cambridgeshire).
Further examples of his important work are held by The Bowes Museum, Barnard
Castle, Co Durham; Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; Walker Art Gallery,
Liverpool; The Royal Society of British Artists.
